We have two different charter rates: one that applies to the high season and another one for the low season. In addition to this distinction, among the costs of renting a yacht you should consider:

  • Value added tax (VAT) or local cruising taxes: vary from 0 to 22%.
  • Security deposit: it is mainly requested if an event is part of your charter. However, depending on the composition of the group, some owners will require it in the contract.
  • Delivery charges and/or redelivery charges: it is possible to charter the yacht away from your home port area or from their current locations. This applies only in some cases, we kindly advice you to consult our brokers beforehand.
  • Crew tip: tipping is a very personal matter and the amount you wish to give is at your discretion. When planning the total cost, it is a factor to be taken into account.
  • Running costs of the charter: these range from 20 to 30% of the charter value, depending on the number of guests and the itinerary. This is called "advanced provisioning allowance", which is explained in detail below.

While the charter fee includes the cost of chartering, crewing and insurance of the superyacht, other items such as fuel, berthing, food and beverages are at the charterer's expense and must be paid separately through the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA).

The APA is an additional 20% to 30% of the charter rate. The transfer is made directly to the yacht captain. Your broker will provide all the necessary bank details ahead of time; if, at the end of the charter, there are unused funds, they will be returned to the charterer. Should your outgoings exceed the initial payment, you can top up the APA in cash while you are onboard.

The APA allows the captain and the crew to prepare and customise your onboard experience. Before the charter, your broker will send you a preference sheet so you can request all your favourite food and beverages. This will then be used to calculate your APA estimation.

Each country has its own tax policy and the rate can vary widely depending on the country. However, our highly experienced charter brokers keep up to date with all the latest policies and will be able to advise you the amount of VAT at the time of booking.

Seriousness and transparency are values that define us as a company. Every yacht reservation includes a contract. Once you have decided to book, you will receive the corresponding contract. Currently, at OceanLux we have 2 different types of standard contracts, and we apply one or the other depending on the region in which you make your trip.

The most common is the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) charter contract, endorsed by a leading London maritime lawyer. This contract has evolved over the last 20 years and is considered the reliable industry standard. The second type is the two-party American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA) contract, which is mainly used in the USA and with US-flagged vessels, also adopting the terms of the MYBA contract.

Generally, a deposit of 50% of the total charter fee is required to be paid prior to signing the Charter Contract by bank transfer. The remaining 50%, together with the provision for provisioning, tax, delivery charges and any other additional charges previously agreed, will be paid one month before the start of the charter, also by bank transfer.

If you have already made a charter reservation and want to cancel it, we suggest that you contact one of our consultants as soon as possible so that they can help you find an alternative date for your trip. In case there is no possibility to reschedule your trip, please note that the cancellation policy will depend on the type of contract applied to your reservation.

According to the MYBA contract (see next question "Are the guests covered by any insurance?"), if you cancel your reservation, the yacht owner may retain the deposit paid or the total charter amount, depending on how far in advance you inform us of your intention to cancel.

In case you cancel the reservation after you have made the deposit, but before the last deadline, the yacht owner will only retain the deposit.

If you have already paid the full amount of the charter, the owner has the right to retain the full amount, but will refund the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance).

Depending on the contract, you may have to take out insurance at your own expense. It is essential that all guest are covered by medical and personal accident insurance. All personal belongings must also be insured against theft, loss or damage.

In addition, we recommend you take out cancellation and curtailment insurance to protect your investment in case unforeseen circumstances prevent or curtail your charter.

There are other suggested insurance coverages, such as Charterer's Liability. Whether you want an advice on any insurance that is not included in the basic charter, please do not hesitate to contact one of our consultants.

We wish people of all ages can enjoy a unique experience on board. Most yachts are very welcoming to children and equipped with everything they need for comfort and fun.

In terms of menus, recreational activities and itineraries, there are also options that may be of interest to you if you are traveling with babies and kids.

It may happen in exceptional cases, that a minimum age of children is stipulated and/or the presence of a nanny on board is required during the charter, as the crew does not offer this service.

Only some yachts are prepared to travel with pets on board. Therefore, we recommend that before completing your reservation, you enquire us if the yacht you have chosen is one of those cases.

Additionally, you must notify us of the breed and size of your pet.

The staff you consider essential for your trip (nannies, doctors, assistants, or the professional you wish) may be accommodated if the yacht has the suitable cabins available for them.

To add special guests, this must be requested prior to booking and additionally inform the full employment status of each guest.

The crew will ensure that your personnel receive the necessary safety training and will provide them with details of how the service works.

Before you make your reservation, we will send you a form sheet. You must fill it out and indicate your preferences and those of all guests, as well as inform the crew of any special requests. Knowing your tastes will allow us to prepare the yacht, offer you a personalised service and fully meet your expectations.

As soon as you receive the preference form, we suggest you fill it out as soon as possible and send it to your charter consultant a month before you set sail.

Prior to your charter, you will receive a preference sheet to be completed and sent to your consultant one month prior to the date of your trip. In this document you can describe as many food and beverage preferences as you wish, as well as mention any special needs or restrictions (illnesses, food allergies, diets, sport or training, etc.).

We encourage you to provide as much information as possible to give the crew a detailed understanding before you step on board so they can offers a better experience for you and other guests.
